Blog #9 Abstract Expressionism
In my art 11 class I was asked to discus how American artist created an American image. To create an American image, American artist used pop Art. American artist looked for a deeper meaning in the style of their art. Before Abstract Expressionism, paintings by artist were focused on fictional origins such as dreams and myths. Artist were stuck in a surrealist phases. American artist used popular culture to make an image truly American. They used images from popular cultures like advertising, and headlines from newspaper. Jackson Pollock and other artist used action or gesture painting to display the artist activity during the creative process. The amazing work of art that many of these artists did was to put the United State in the map of the International Art world. Yes I do agree with what they think America is. I also believe that artist liked to express themselves through the form of Art, because it allowed them to express their emotions through what they create.

Museum Paper. Blog #10

In my Art 11 class I was asked to visit the museum and review a modern art exhibit. I want to say that my experience at the museum was a great experience, because I felt this new experience enriched my soul and will be the beginning of visits here and other museums.

While I was at the Metropolitan Museum of Art I noticed that the modern era art exhibit did not have many sculptures. I believe this is due to the fact that modern art uses more color and black and white painting. Honestly, at first, I was uncomfortable at the museum, because I really did not want to write a paper about it. After a while I was drawing the images that I saw, I felt relaxed and my mind was at peace due to the silence of the museum.

The first painting that I am going to describe is Mr. and Mrs. Chester Dale,

Dine out, 1924. According to my research, this painting was made of oil on canvas, by the artist named Guy Pene du Bois. He was born in 1884 and died in 1958. He was an American-born French guy. I noticed that he was straight by reading into his personal life through his painting. In the painting he drew his first wife, Maud; she was a painter and a writer.  The painting shows him and his wife with a waiter at the fashionable hotel Brevoort.  I believe that one thing that makes him different from the other two artists is that he was also a wealthy investment banker and prominent art collector. There was a quote at the museum that caught my attention which said, “Pene du Bois’s portrayls of New York’s high society between the wars frequently record the telling body language of his protagonists”. I believe this means that this artist interpreted his art through people’s body language and reaction.

The second painting is Staatliches Bauhaus in Weima by Walter Gropius. Walter Gropius was born in Germany in 1883 and died in 1969. The book was published by the Bauhaus, preceding well known Bauhausbucher proper of 1925.  He had a unique way of using photography. The museum references said that the Thuringian Legislative Assembly, which wished to have a public display of the accomplishments of the first four years of his work. They also mention that Gropius chose the theme, “Art and technique: a new unity. This book was issued on the occasion of the great Weiner Bauhaus exhibition of 1923.

The third artist is Morris Louis. He was born in the United States in 1912 and died in 1962. He became a painter in the mid 1950’s. While I was drawing his painting I was able to learn more about his historical way of painting. He was known for his use of bright modern colors and washes of synthetic paint. I was able to learn about his way of painting by the references which said that Louis’s series of purely abstract works. They include his unfurled works from 1951-1959 of which the present work is an example. The painting demonstrated streaks of bold pigment, poured at angles to the bottom corners of the support, leaving a large area of raw, unembellished canvas at the center.

I saw works by three different artists using three different materials, oil, photography, streaks of pigments. They were different in their approach but they all had a story to tell in an abstract way. I guess that is what modern art is about hints which let the observer come to conclusions.

Painting vs. Photography

Blog #6

In my art 11 class I was asked to explain how photography changed the way people understand painting.

While I was watching the video based on John Berger’s TV series “Way of Seeing “, I was able to notice that when paintings are being reproduced they became a form of information . Paintings are images that can be used by anybody and any purpose.

During the 20 century John Berger discovered something about ourselves and the situation that we are living in. There many evidence in the video that shows how he discovered something about us. One of the examples that he used in the video was perspective makes the eye. Appearances can travel around the world.

Photography has changed the way people understand painting. We are able to observe some of this change in the film of 1928. The video explained the invention of the camera. The painting in the wall, as a human eye, can only be in one place at one time.  Another way that I and my classmates were able to notice how painting has changed the way people understands painting is with the development of new technology to see painting. For example the video mentioned that the days of pilgrims are over, because a painting now comes to you. You don’t have to go to them.

After watching the video by Berger’s I have obtained the privileges to learn to appreciate more a painting. I now understand that is it so important to preserve the images of a painting because of market values. What I mean by market value is what painting lost when camera made them reproductive, like multiple possible meaning and destroy it original meaning.

Homework #5

3/11/2013

In art class for my blog post #5 I was asked to explain the differences between Roman and Gothic Arches in art.

While I was reading chapter number 13 in the art book I was able to learn so much about the Gothic Art. According to the book the Gothic term primarily came from the Western Europe around the twelfth century and in France around the sixteenth century and to other parts of Europe.

I believe that one of the differences between and Gothic Arches in art is that the Romanesque follow the Gothic style. The Gothic style refers to the time during the Middle Ages in European architecture. Another way where I was able to notice differences between Roman and Gothic Arches it was when I was looking at the shape of the arches architecture and the count of window. The word Romanesque came because that follow the Roman style as opposed of Gothic people who were more based on making the architecture more pointed because of the idea of elevation meaning having higher buildings. An example of this is in page one hundred and ninety eight; there the book shows a diagram of a Gothic cathedral.

There is a quote in the book that catches my attention that said “Since the wall space between buttress were no longer necessary for structural support. They could be pierced by large windows to achieve the desired increases in light.” While I was reading about the Gothic arch’s architecture in the book I notice that the pointed arch is an intersection of two arcs of nonconcentric circles. Another example that shows a different between these two terms is that the pointed arch minimize the lateral, or the sideways in the structure against the wall. This pointed arch permit the structure to be more flexible building element.

So what I have learned in art about the differences between Roman and Gothic Arches, I believe that by now my classmates and me we are able to learn many reasons why architects invented Gothic arches when Roman arches were already invented. I am now able to understand why we have in today society many churches with pointed roof; they are following the Gothic arch art.

Homework #4

In art class here at Bronx Community College we have been discussing the differences of Ancient Egyptian and Ancient Greek. We were asked to give our opinion as well as defend the Greek Styles of art. In order to support my opinion I will provide evidence that I have learned   from art class.

During the discussion in art class I was able to learn why in today society people prefer Ancient Greek art instead of Ancient Egyptian art. I recall from the discussion we had in class many reasons why people prefer Ancient Greek art instead of Ancient Egyptian. One of those reasons is that the sculpture that the Ancient Greek made in the past was more realistic as opposed as Ancient Egyptian.

I noticed that the Ancient Greek care about physical perfection. One the different of the Ancient Greek is that they legs were longer because they wanted to be equal with the upper body structure.  I also learned that no human being in real life will ever have a perfect body structure. From the discussion in class I also recall that the Ancient Greek desired to exaggerate facial structure.

So what we have learn in art about the Ancient Greek, I believe that  by now we know  many reason why people prefer Ancient Greek but one reason that impacted  me was when in art class the professor said that the Ancient Greek wanted their sculpture of  human body to be physically perfect.
